Earl pulled out the camouflage suit. The stringy tendrils made the wearer look like some kind of swamp monster. There were varying degrees of craftsmanship from suit to suit and brand to brand, but they all pretty much looked the same from a distance. I couldn't be certain that this was the same suit.

I wasn't familiar with Earl's physical capabilities. I didn't know how fast he could run or just how maneuverable he was. But from my brief glimpse of the shooter, he was quick. That didn’t quite match Earl’s current condition. It's quite possible that running away from the scene of the incident caused him to tweak his knee.

If his injury was genuine, he wouldn’t be doing any running now.

"What kind of weapons do you own?" I asked.

"I got shotguns, rifles, pistols, and a few black powder rifles."

"You own a .30-06?"

"I do." He exhaled a frustrated breath, and his eyes narrowed at me again. "I'm not sure what the point of this is."

"You mind if we take a look around your property?" Sheriff Donnelly asked.

"Knock yourself out, Sheriff."

"You want to take us out to the fence line at Widow’s Point?"

Earl sighed, "I reckon."

He hobbled out of the foyer and onto the veranda. He grabbed the railing as he climbed down the creaky wooden steps and shuffled to his truck. It was an old red and white Chevy with a fair amount of rust. He climbed in, and the door creaked, then clanged as he pulled it shut. The engine rumbled as he cranked it up, and we hopped back into the patrol cars.

Earl led us down a dirt path to the southwest side of his property. When we had gone as far as the road would allow, we climbed out, and Earl pointed us in the direction. "You don't mind if I sit this one out. I'm not inclined to tackle the terrain today."

JD stayed behind and kept Earl company.

Earl didn't look too pleased about that.

We marched along the rocky, uneven ground, through the craggy bushes, cedar, and mesquite trees to a clearing by the fence line that bordered Widow’s Point to the south.

During the shooting, I had tried my best to find landmarks to identify the shooter's position as he scampered off. All the terrain looked similar out here, and it was hard to pinpoint the location from this side of the fence. I finally settled on an area. "I think the shooter was right about here."

From where I stood, there was a direct line of sight to the trail where we had been standing and where Jim had been shot. It was as good a vantage point as any. There was a low boulder that offered a perfect shooting position with a little bit of cover. A clear trail to the northwest allowed exfiltration. Then the terrain sloped down to a valley. There were plenty of trees to cover the escape route.

We searched the area, looking for shell casings. It took about 15 minutes of scouring the ground, but we came up with two shell casings from a .
